Branda swore under her breath as she tried to shoot the woman in the lead, her confidence completely replaced by panic and fear as a scene from a nightmare unfolded in front of her.

The bolts of explosive energy had shattered any semblance of coordination among her people and decimated their numbers, then the group had attacked. Energy bolts lanced out with unerring accuracy, hammering shields where members of the Counts had them, and felling those who didn’t.

The ground shook when one of the attackers swung her hammer, crushing the chest of a woman with a single, horrifying blow, and the red-haired woman cackled madly, her voice piercing over the roar of combat. It was chilling, but almost worse was how the one in the green in gold armor almost strolled across the field of battle, a crimson energy whip creating an intricate web in the air. With every movement, a gun, arm, or throat was struck, and the only times that the whip didn’t simply destroy what it struck was when the target’s shields were still up. That simply allowed the whip to lash out again, and the shields rarely were able to stop two blows.

But even those two didn’t terrify Branda as much as the woman in the lead, the one who’d spoken earlier. That was because Branda’s traitorous brain had finally identified the voice she’d heard earlier. Evelyn Tarth was a legend, but she’d never, ever, expected to run into her. If Branda thought she’d have the slightest chance of getting away, she’d have turned and ran.

Instead, she could only watch in horror as Evelyn sidestepped Branda’s shot, then cut Kutter, the gang’s self-proclaimed melee specialist, in half after only a single exchange. She made it look easy.

“Run! Run, damn it all!” Branda yelled, and she yanked a grenade off her belt, throwing it over the barrier.

Before the grenade could even hit the ground, Evelyn took a sliding step forward and swung her energy blade, cutting the grenade cleanly in two. It landed on either side of her, and the woman looked at Branda, smiling coldly.

“You should have thought of that earlier,” Evelyn replied calmly.

The next moment all Branda felt was searing pain, and she screamed as she fell to the ground.
